“Then Daniel answered the king, ‘You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.   Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.’” (Daniel 5:17)

Greetings Saints,

In Daniel the fifth Chapter, King Belshazzar has been troubled by a human finger that has appeared and written into the plaster of a wall a statement for which he has no interpretation. The king sends for his wise men, enchanters, astrologers and diviners (fortune tellers). He promises them that whoever can read the writing will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck and he will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom. It is a reward of    leadership, wealth and authority. Despite the great promises made and the “talents” of those assembled, none of these men could interpret the writing. That made the king even more fearful.

The Queen, upon hearing about the writing on the wall that was troubling the king, comes to him and reminds him of a man, Daniel, who served under his father King Nebuchadnezzar and was a great interpreter of dreams.  King Belshazzar sends for Daniel and makes him the same promise he made to his wise men of leadership, wealth and authority. Daniel’s response to the king is found is verse 17, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else. Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.” Why would Daniel reject offerings of the king for leadership, wealth and  authority?

Simply put, Daniel wanted God to get the glory out of what he was about to do! And Daniel understood that only God could give true leadership, wealth that would last, and authority that would mean something. He understood that if he honored God everything else would fall into place.

Daniels message to us is clear and simple—be willing to serve without being selfish, give help out of honor without holding people hostage, give assistance without having to be acknowledged by the world, and do everything in such a way that God will get the glory for it all! We can only do what we do if God is with us. We can only achieve what we achieve if God is for us; and, “if God be for us, who can be against us?”
